Education

Education benefits from the major portion of the Charity’s budget, with priority being given to educational establishments that have an historical link with the Grocers’ Company.

Scholarships and bursaries are funded at a number of schools and colleges; Oundle School, St. Paul’s Cathedral School, the City of London Freemen’s School, City of London School for Boys and the City of London School for Girls, The Elms School, Colwall in Worcestershire, the City and Guilds of London Art School, The Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Reed’s School at Cobham in Surrey. It should be noted that the respective head teachers award all these scholarships and bursaries internally.

Two schools in the state sector have historic links with the Company, the Henry Box School in Witney, Oxfordshire, and Mossbourne Community Academy in Hackney, East London.

In 2002, an exceptional donation of £25,000 was made to The Henry Box School, at Witney in Oxfordshire, in support of the School’s successful bid to gain Specialist College Status. The eponymous Henry Box, a member of the Grocers’ Company, founded the school in the seventeenth century. In recent years having re-established a closer link, the Company provides a nominated representative on its Governing Body.

Mossbourne Community Academy opened in September 2004.  It occupies the former site of Hackney Downs School, founded by the Company in 1876, which over the 20th century had evolved from a grammar school to a secondary comprehensive catering for boys of all abilities. Sadly, in 1995, Hackney Downs closed its doors as it was found to be ‘failing’.

Oundle School

In 1556 Alderman Sir William Laxton re-founded and endowed a free grammar school in his native town of Oundle, in Northamptonshire. Situated about eighty miles north of London, in the small and attractive market town, it is now one of the largest independent schools in the country.

The Grocers’ Company Queen’s Golden Jubilee Scholarship Fund

In 2003 the Company, in conjunction with the Charity, set aside £500,000 to establish an endowment fund to mark HM The Queen’s Golden Jubilee, the income from which is used to provide scholarships to help London University to attract students of exceptional ability. Initially, The Grocers’ Company Queen’s Golden Jubilee Scholarship Fund is providing scholarships at Imperial College and University College London, which commenced with the academic year 2003/04. The Scholarships are awarded to students nominated by the respective colleges.
