Education
benefits from the major portion of the Charity’s budget,
with priority being given to educational establishments that
have an historical link with the Grocers’ Company.
Scholarships
and bursaries are funded at a number of schools and colleges;
Oundle School, St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir School, the
City of London Freemen’s School, City of London School
for Boys and the City of London School for Girls, The Elms School,
Colwall in Worcestershire, the City and Guilds of London Art
School, The Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Reed’s
School at Cobham in Surrey. It should be noted that the respective
head teachers award all these scholarships and bursaries internally.
In
2002, an exceptional donation of £25,000 was made to The
Henry Box School, at Witney in Oxfordshire, in support of the
School’s successful bid to gain Specialist College Status.
The eponymous Henry Box, a member of the Grocers’ Company,
founded the school in the seventeenth century but unlike the
other schools with which the Company has historic links, it
has evolved into a mixed secondary school. In recent years having
re-established a closer link, the Company provides a nominated
representative on its Governing Body.
Below
you can link to three of the schools mentioned above, all of
which were founded by Members of the Company in the 16th and
17th centuries.
